Tantrums vs Meltdowns

Understanding children’s behaviour through brain development, the nervous system, and emotional overwhelm.
When Big Feelings Overflow
Most parents have experienced moments where a child becomes completely overwhelmed.
Crying.
Screaming.
Collapsing.Throwing things.
Running away.
Hitting.
Shutting down.
In these moments, adults often wonder:
“Is this a tantrum?”
“Is this a meltdown?”
“How should I respond?”
“Are they doing this on purpose?”
Tantrums and meltdowns can sometimes look very similar from the outside. But internally, very different nervous system experiences may be happening.
While tantrums are often more connected to frustration-driven behaviour, meltdowns are more closely linked to nervous system overload.
Understanding the difference can help adults respond with greater clarity, compassion, and effectiveness.
What Is a Tantrum?
Tantrums are a developmentally normal part of childhood.
Young children are still learning how to:
tolerate frustration
manage disappointment
communicate needs
wait
cope with limits
and regulate big emotions
Tantrums often happen when:
a child wants something they cannot have
a limit is set
frustration builds
or the child is tired, hungry, overstimulated, or emotionally overwhelmed
During a tantrum, children are dysregulated, but they may still have some awareness of:
the people around them
whether they are being observed
and whether their needs or wants are being responded to
Unlike meltdowns, tantrums can sometimes be more goal-oriented, meaning the child may still be seeking a particular outcome, response, or change in the situation.
This does not mean tantrums are manipulative or intentionally difficult.
Young children are still learning how to cope with disappointment, frustration, waiting, and unmet needs. Their brains are still developing the ability to regulate emotions safely and flexibly.
Children are not born knowing how to calm themselves down.
Emotional regulation develops gradually through repeated experiences of co-regulation, safety, and supportive relationships.
What Is a Meltdown?
Any child can experience overwhelm beyond their capacity to cope, especially when they are very young, tired, emotionally flooded, overstimulated, unwell, or under stress.
Brief episodes of intense dysregulation can be developmentally common in toddlers and preschool-aged children, whose brains are still developing emotional regulation skills.
However, frequent, intense, or prolonged meltdowns beyond the early childhood years, particularly when they significantly impact daily functioning, may sometimes be associated with autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, anxiety, trauma, or other nervous system and developmental differences.
Meltdowns are not simply “big tantrums.” They are often signs that the nervous system has moved beyond the child’s current capacity to cope.
During a meltdown, the child is often no longer able to access regulation, reasoning, or behavioural control in the usual way.
Meltdowns are not usually goal-oriented.
The child is not trying to “win,” manipulate, or gain control over others.
Instead, the nervous system has become overloaded beyond what the brain and body can currently manage.
What’s Happening in the Brain and Nervous System?
When children become highly overwhelmed, the brain shifts away from higher reasoning and toward survival.
Research in neuroscience helps us understand that during intense stress:
the amygdala (the brain’s alarm system) becomes highly activated
stress hormones increase
the nervous system prepares for danger
and access to the prefrontal cortex decreases
The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain responsible for:
impulse control
emotional regulation
reasoning
flexible thinking
problem-solving
and learning
This is one reason children often cannot simply:
“calm down”
“use their words”
think logically
or respond well to correction during moments of intense overwhelm.
From a nervous system perspective, survival comes before learning.
When the brain perceives danger, stress, or overwhelm, the nervous system prioritises protection and safety rather than reflection or problem-solving.
This is especially important to remember during meltdowns, but it can also apply during intense tantrums when children become emotionally flooded beyond their current capacity to cope.
Children’s brains and nervous systems also develop through repeated experiences and relationships over time.
When children experience chronic overwhelm or stress without enough support, safety, co-regulation, or repair, the nervous system can become more sensitive and reactive.
Over time, some children may become:
more emotionally reactive
more anxious or hypervigilant
more easily overwhelmed
emotionally shut down
or more sensitive to stress
This does not mean that occasional tantrums, meltdowns, or emotional outbursts are harmful or damaging.
Big feelings and dysregulation are normal parts of childhood development.
What matters most is not preventing children from ever becoming overwhelmed, but helping them experience support, safety, co-regulation, and repair through difficult moments.
The hopeful part of neuroscience is that the brain remains adaptable.
Through supportive relationships, emotional safety, play, co-regulation, and repeated experiences of returning to regulation, children’s nervous systems can gradually become more flexible and resilient over time.
How Can Adults Tell the Difference?
In real life, tantrums and meltdowns do not always look completely different from the outside.
And sometimes, children may move between frustration and genuine overwhelm very quickly.
Because of this, it is not always possible, or necessary, to perfectly label the moment immediately.
Instead of focusing only on the behaviour itself, it can help to observe:
the child’s level of overwhelm
whether they can still engage or respond
and how their nervous system responds to connection and support
For example, during a tantrum, a child may still be able to:
pause briefly
respond to problem-solving
become more flexible once they feel understood
or calm more quickly when a solution feels possible
During a meltdown, children are often far less able to shift out of the state, even when adults offer reassurance, solutions, or comfort.
The nervous system may remain overwhelmed despite the adult’s support because the child has moved beyond their current capacity to regulate.
For some parents, it can help to approach calmly with something like:
“I’m here to help you.”
“Let’s figure this out together.”
“You’re having a hard time right now.”
The child’s response can sometimes provide important information.
A child experiencing frustration-driven behaviour may become more flexible once they feel heard, supported, or hopeful that the situation can improve.
A child in meltdown, however, may continue crying, shutting down, or appearing unreachable because the nervous system is still in a state of overload.
This distinction is not about deciding whether a child is being “good” or “bad.”
It is about understanding what level of support the child’s nervous system may need in that moment.
How Adults Can Respond During a Tantrum
During tantrums, children still need emotional support and co-regulation alongside clear boundaries.
Helpful responses may include:
staying calm and regulated yourself
using fewer words
acknowledging feelings
holding limits calmly
offering reassurance and connection
For example:
“I know this feels really disappointing.”
“You’re angry because you wanted more time.”
“I’m here with you while you feel upset.”
Once the child begins calming, gentle problem-solving can follow:
“Let’s think about what we can do now.”
“Would you like to walk or hop to the car?”
Children do not need adults to remove every limit. But they do need support while their brains are still developing the ability to manage frustration and emotion.
How Adults Can Respond During a Meltdown
During meltdowns, the priority becomes safety and nervous system support.
Children in meltdown are often unable to process reasoning, consequences, lectures, or too much language.
What often helps most is:
reducing sensory input
lowering your voice
using minimal language
staying physically nearby (if welcomed)
removing extra demands
and allowing recovery time
For example:
“You’re safe.”
“I’m here.”
“Your body is very overwhelmed right now.”
For some children, even questions or attempts to problem-solve during a meltdown may increase overwhelm.
Sometimes the nervous system needs less input, not more.
What Usually Does Not Help
During moments of overwhelm, children often struggle to access higher reasoning and self-control.
Because of this, responses such as:
yelling
punishment
threats
shame
lectures
or forcing eye contact
often increase dysregulation rather than reduce it.
This does not mean children do not need boundaries.
It means that teaching, reflection, and problem-solving are far more effective once the nervous system has returned to a calmer and safer state.
After the Storm: The Importance of Repair and Reflection
Once a child has regulated, this is when reflection, teaching, and repair can happen more effectively.
When the nervous system feels calmer and safer again, the brain is better able to access:
reasoning
language
emotional understanding
problem-solving
and learning
This is when children are far more capable of thinking about what happened and what might help next time.
This might sound like:
“That was a really hard moment.”
“Your body got very overwhelmed.”
“What do you think might help next time?”
“Let’s make a plan together.”
These conversations are not about punishment or shame.
They are opportunities to help children gradually build emotional awareness, coping strategies, and more flexible responses over time.
Children are not born automatically knowing how to manage frustration, overwhelm, disappointment, or sensory stress. These skills develop slowly through repeated experiences of support, co-regulation, reflection, and repair.
Revisiting difficult moments calmly afterwards is important because hard experiences do not simply disappear once the crying stops.
When difficult moments are ignored completely, some children may quietly internalise shame, confusion, or the feeling that their emotions are “too much” or unsafe to talk about.
Repair helps children experience something different:
That relationships can remain safe even after hard moments.
That emotions can be talked about.
That overwhelm can be understood with support rather than shame.
Over time, these repeated experiences help strengthen the child’s developing capacity for emotional regulation and self-understanding.
How Play Therapy Can Help
In play therapy, children are supported through emotional expression, regulation, sensory experiences, and relationship-based co-regulation in developmentally appropriate ways.
Play can offer children a safe space to process overwhelm while helping caregivers better understand the emotional and nervous system needs underneath behaviour.
For many children, play communicates what words cannot yet fully express.
Some approaches, such as filial therapy, also support the relationship between children and caregivers directly by helping parents learn therapeutic play and connection skills that strengthen emotional safety, attachment, communication, and co-regulation within the parent-child relationship itself.
Rather than focusing only on changing behaviour, these approaches help children feel more understood, supported, and emotionally connected over time.
A Gentle Reminder
Children are not born knowing how to manage overwhelming feelings.
Their brains, nervous systems, and emotional regulation skills are still developing.
Behind many tantrums and meltdowns is not a child trying to give adults a hard time, but a child having a hard time internally.
And often, what helps children most is not punishment or perfection, but safety, connection, and nervous systems that can help guide them back toward regulation.
